Little Elm, like many across the nation, will never forget the events that transpired on Sept. 11, 2001, and the town will be honoring the 10th anniversary throughout the weekend through ceremonies.

Youth remembers

Cesar Chavez Elementary students will take part in remembering those who lost their lives and those who responded through the Patriot's Day Assembly from 9:15-9:45 a.m. today at the school, 2600 Hart Road.

"It gives them perspective," John Lowman, Chavez Elementary principal, said. "We don't go into all the gory details, but just go into the broad strokes of really trying to honor our first responders and remember that Americans lost their lives."

The oldest students at the school in fifth grade are the only students born in 2001, and Lowman said they have seen photos or heard about the event. The rest of the students weren't even born before the tragic events of that day.

"Most of them have trouble understanding it," Lowman said. "Even the concept, it's hard for them to understand why that event would happen and why that would happen to our country."

He said the assembly is also about presenting the historical accuracy of the event.

"It reminds a lot of us the school to remember the freedoms we have," Lowman said.

The fifth grade will present a program during the event, which includes several speaking parts. Fifth Grade Teacher Audrey Pruitt will also display a video presentation.

A banner signed by the students will be presented to the police and fire departments, which will be in attendance at the event, including Fire Chief Joe Florentino. The assembly will close with the singing of the "Star Spangled Banner."

The event coincides with "Grandparents Day" at the school, promising a large attendance to the assembly. Parents and grandparents are both invited to the event.

"We're looking forward to it," Lowman said.

Veterans remember

The American Legion Post 182 will host the third annual Patriot's Day Ceremony at 7:30 a.m. Sunday at the Little Elm ISD Athletic Complex, 1151 East Eldorado Parkway.

The early morning event will be host to multiple events including an air show over the Athletic Complex. Led by Squadron Leader United States Air Force Colonel (Retired) Ed Askins, the Cougar Squadron will present a fly-over during the event. Former military pilots will fly the other planes. A CareFlite helicopter is scheduled to land for display.

Post 182 Commander Rick McLemore will give a welcome to the attendees of the event and Council Member Hal Grant will be the acting emcee. Invocation will be given by Fire Department Chaplain and Town Council Member Richard Stevens. The National Anthem will be played by Holly Crye on the trumpet.

Returning guest speaker will be Colonel Samuel Ted Studdard, U.S. Marine Corps Commanding Officer of the Eighth Marine Corps District.

"I'm looking forward to the whole program itself," Grant said. "The speaker we had is from last year, who is a good speaker."

The closing of the ceremony will be given by Rev. Denise Peckman of Button United Memorial Church. "TAPS" will be played on the bugle by Mike Skaggs, American Legion Finance Officer.

The Little Elm Fire and Police Honor Guard will be in attendance, and the Little Elm Fire Department Scottish Bagpipes is set to perform at the event.

The American Legion members will also be presenting the Posting of the Flags ceremony and will be displaying their newest addition, a 1970 M35A2 Cargo Truck, or two-ton Deuce 'N Half military truck, with their banner displayed.
